Regulating the use of commercial signs to eliminate visual clutter
The Signs and License Division is responsible for enforcement of the Sign Ordinance that was enacted by the City Council to:

Preserve and protect the aesthetic value of land

Promote a pleasant environment while providing for a consistent regulation of commercial signs

Reduce the risk of distraction or confusion to drivers

Eliminate structural hazards

Protect and promote the tourism industry by providing an unobstructed view of the City's scenic areas.
General Information
All signs except certain exempt signs require an approved sign permit from the City. To be approved, a sign must meet the rules and standards of the City's Sign Ordinance. Applications for Signs are available at the Signs and License Division or can be printed online.
How do I apply for a sign permit?
A permit application must be completed and submitted to the Signs and License Division located on the first floor of the Hood Building, located at 200 S. President St. In addition to the application the following must be submitted:
Follow-up by the Division Inspectors
The Signs and License inspectors are responsible for locating illegal signs and notifying owners who must comply with the Sign Ordinance within a designated period or be fined. If you have any concerns about a sign, please call the office for additional information.
If a sign is erected before a permit fee is paid, the permit fee can be doubled.
If a sign permit is not obtained, court action may be taken, and a fine is probable.
